Changes to FIE Equipment Rules – Masks
The new requirements apply to the fastening systems for masks. These requirements were introduced in response to safety concerns followinng a number of incidents in which masks have fallen off during bouts. Further details are contained in Rule m25.7 of the FIE Material Rules – click here
During the 2017/18 FIE season, the new mask fastening requirements only apply to the Cadet & Junior World Championships and the Senior World Championships. The new requirements will apply to all FIE events from the start of the 2018/19 season (September 2018).
The AFF Board and the FV Executive have determined that the new mask fastening requirements will apply to all AFC events and all Category 1 State Events from 1 January 2019.
Each of the leading mask manufacturers is currently in the process of finalising the arrangements for retro-fitting their existing masks so that they will comply with the new requirements.
Following this process, we anticipate that a number of Australian-based distributors will be approved by the various manufacturers to undertake the retro-fitting process. The AFF and FV will assist by publishing this information, where it is made available to us.
As at 16 August 2018, we have been advised that the following distributors have received approval to retro-fit masks (subject to the conditions imposed by the manufacturers):
- Fencing Imports Australia (contact Kayt Spano) – approved by Allstar, Uhlmann, Negrini, Leon Paul and FWF
- JG Fencing (contact Jeff Gray) – approved by Leon Paul and Absolute Fencing
- Swordsplay (contact Jeff Hardge) – approved by PBT and Allstar
