This Policy takes effect immediately. All Aged Group Fencers should take careful note of the requirements they must fulfill in order to represent their State at National events.

U15/U17 & U20 Information Day requirements for 2023
The Selection Criteria for Athletes representing Victoria in National Championships for the age categories of U15, U17 and U20 are listed below. Please ensure that they are read and understood.
All Age Categories Information Session
For all fencers wishing to represent Victoria at U15 and/or U17/Cadet and/or Junior National Championships, on Sunday 29th January 2023. The purpose of this session is to provide information regarding both the competition and the Fencing Victoria Team arrangements for the tour. This is of importance to those who have not previously attended a National Competition. See the Fencing Victoria website for more details.
Attendance at the information session is compulsory.
U20 2023 Selection (Melbourne, 3-6 February 2023)
It is a requirement that to be selected to represent Victoria at Junior National Championships, fencers must compete in THREE Victorian Competitions of which at least 1 Event MUST be Category 1, or 2 and a National/State Weapons Camp in 2022/23 (BEFORE 30th January), as a minimum, at U20 or higher (i.e., B-Grade or Open level) or if age eligible, at Senior Secondary level in the Schools League (Epee or Foil). Note that an Athlete meeting the competition requirement above will be able to enter multiple events in any weapon category.

U20 2023 Selection (Melbourne, TBA: February 2024)
It is a requirement that to be selected to represent Victoria at Junior National Championships, fencers must compete in THREE Victorian Competitions s of which at least 1 Event MUST be Category 1, or 2 and a National/State Weapons Camp in 2023/24 (BEFORE 31st January), as a minimum, at U20 or higher (i.e., B-Grade or Open level) or if age eligible, at Senior Secondary level in the Schools League individual events. Note that an athlete meeting the competition requirement above will be able to enter multiple events in any weapon category.
U15/U17 Australian Youth and Cadet Championships (July 7 – July 11, Sydney)
It is a requirement that to be selected to represent Victoria at U15/Cadet National Championships, fencers must compete in THREE Victorian Competitions of which at least 1 Event MUST be Category 1, or 2 and a National/State Weapons Camp in 2023 (BEFORE 26th June), as a minimum. This must be achieved in your Age Level (minimum Age Level Competition being U15), or higher (i.e. U17, U20, B-Grade or Open level) or if age eligible, at Junior or Senior Secondary level, in the Schools League Epee. Note that an Athlete meeting the competition requirement above will be able to enter multiple events in any weapon category.
Fencing Victoria reserves the right to cancel individual entries if selection criteria have not been met.
Exemption from Compulsory Events for Selection
Athletes can apply for exemption from these requirements. Exemption requests must be received within 7 days of the event the exemption is relating to.
Information Day: Athletes may request an exemption from the Information Session, if they have previously attended age group national competitions. The request must be made in writing to either the General Manager or Operations Manager. The request will be considered the athlete advised of the outcome in writing prior to the event.

Competition Requirement: Athletes may request an exemption from declared competition requirement or the information session after those events on the following grounds:
Medical Withdrawal: A Medical Certificate will be required, confirming the reason of absence.
Geographical Withdrawal: Athletes will need to demonstrate they were unable to attend the event due to their location at the time of the event. This will be deemed as being more than 100 kilometres from the event at the time it was held. The request must be made in writing to either the General Manager or Operations Manager. The request must be received no more than 7 days after the scheduled date of the event for which exemption is sought. The Fencing Victoria Executive/Management will consider the request and advise the athlete of the outcome in writing within 14 days of lodgement of the request.
Special Circumstances: Athletes who would like to apply for an exemption from these stipulations under special circumstances (for example: study, international travel) may make a request to alter their qualification. This request must be made in writing to either the General Manager (Generalmanager@fencingvictoria.org) or Operations Manager (operations@fencingvictoria.org). The request must be received at least 28 days prior to the commencement of the relevant National Championship. These exemptions or variations will be at the discretion of the Fencing Victoria Executive/Management. This may only qualify you for the individual event and will be taken on a case, by case basis, at the discretion of Fencing Victoria Executive.
Appeals Process
If an athlete is not selected for the representative team, they can appeal the non-selection decision.
The request must be made in writing to either the General Manager or Operations Manager. The request must be received at least 14 days prior to the commencement of the relevant National Championship. The Fencing Victoria Executive/Management will consider the appeal and advise the athlete of the outcome in writing at least 7 days prior to the commencement of the relevant National Championship.
COVID-19 Considerations (Force Majeure)
In the event of disruption to competitions, Fencing Victoria will adjust selection criteria accordingly. It is our intention to ensure that fencers wishing to represent Victoria at Aged National events are able and prepared. This preparation may be extended to include further information sessions or competitions in lieu. These will be announced at the discretion of the Fencing Victoria executive or management.
