Nominations for the Fencing Victoria Board 2024

Re-Nominations

Tim O’Loan

I originally fenced at school (decades ago!) and returned to the sport as a way to spend more time with my daughters, with fencing providing the perfect engaging and challenging environment to achieve that. It has been amazing as a parent to see my kids flourish in the supportive club environment, learn how to ‘be coached’, and to feel comfortable in a competitive environment. Being a bit competitive I also want to see Victoria and Australia continue to develop on the national and international stage as a place where more serious fencing takes place.

Professionally I’ve been involved with the planning, funding and design of every thing from train stations, stadium precincts, university campuses and airports. I’ve also worked on business case and design projects for sporting organisations with challenges similar to those faced by fencing in Victoria. I have been involved in helping Fencing Victoria try to obtain a larger venue so that the sport can continue to grow, as well as helping to make sure the board runs in a professional manner. I know the challenges are significant and that many talented people have already achieved much, however I am very interested in continuing to do what I can to help the Board take fencing in this state to the next level.

Alicia Rendell

I have been serving on the Board in the capacity of Treasurer for the past 2 years managing the day-to-day finances as well as navigating the Covid recovery.

During the day I work as an accountant for a multinational company registered on the Ibex 30.

I follow fencing vicariously through my daughter Elanor and her love for fencing, CrossXswords and the wider fencing community.

New Nominations

Gaochao (Arthus) Chu

Dr Chu has been a long standing member of Fencing Victoria, started as a devoted member of the Monash University fencing club and a medallist represented Monash University in state competitions. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery from Monash University and Diploma of Surgical Anatomy from University of Melbourne. Professionally, he is a managing partner at a skin cancer clinic in outer Melbourne, caring for the most vulnerable Victorians and curing cancers on a daily basis. He is licensed to practice medicine in both the UK and Australia and has worked in global health policies at the World Health Organization. He looks forward to working collaboratively with fellow board members and stakeholders to drive positive change within our organisation. His vision for the future of Fencing Victoria is one where every member feels valued, supported, and empowered to pursue their passion for fencing at all stages of life.

John Varano

I am a Director of Transformation at Worley, a transformation leader and strategic advisor with over 17 years’ experience across several market-leading businesses.

I have a strong background in managing and delivering enterprise transformational programs, partnering with executive and senior levels of large matrix organisations that continuously evolve and change.

My qualifications are from Oxford, Johns Hopkins, Melbourne and Monash Universities, and I have completed the Company Directors Course with the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

I been involved in Fencing Victoria (FV) for several years, supporting my son, David. I would be grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Board as I am passionate about helping to transform FV’s strategic direction, to empower its organisation to continue to foster and promote fencing in Victoria and to ensure it is equipped to deliver the needs of FV’s membership.

Domenic Yates

I am nominating for the board as I would like to contribute to ensuring FV is a well run and sustainable organisation that meets the needs of the fencing community.

I have been a member of Fencing Victoria for more than half my life. I have competed at the national and international level and hope that with this experience I can help make Victoria the best state for fencers who want to compete at a high level. Of course there is more to fencing than competing at a high level and I think that it is important that the Victorian fencing community has something to offer for fencers of all skill levels and ages.

I train at the state center several times a week and hope that if I am elected to the board I can be a point of contact for people with questions and feedback for Fencing Victoria.

Outside of fencing I am a software developer and if elected to the board I would use my skills to help Fencing Victoria leverage technology to give the best experience to the community.
