SARAH OSVATH WINS AUSTRALIAN AND OCEANIA VETERAN WOMEN’S EPEE CHAMPIONSHIP

MEDIA RELEASE

10 December 2023

NORTH MELBOURNE – NSW fencer Sarah Osvath won Tuesday’s Australian and Oceania veteran women’s epee competition, as part of the 2023 Australian and Oceania Senior, Veteran, and Australian Youth Circuit Fencing Championships.

She reflected on the changes she’s seen during her fencing career: “I’ve been an active fencer for five decades, and I have witnessed a significant number of changes. The most significant would be the introduction of women’s epee and sabre, so that we have gender equity and parity among all weapons in this sport we all love. I did 20 years of foil first, although now I’m predominantly an epeeist, because that was the only weapon available. It took right up until the Atlanta Olympics where I got to compete int the first women’s epee. event That’s a fantastic change that goes across all three weapons and all age groups.”

She said that friendship and supportiveness among fencers was one of the reasons she stays active in fencing. “It’s a great community, especially the veterans,” she said. “We’re all trying to still keep active and healthy, but we work together to help each other. We are getting older, and we want to stay involved in the sport we love.”

She added, “I’m looking forward to another decade of fencing at least. My main goal each year is to do as well as I can in the Veterans World Championships. Same for Commonwealth, in my age category. To achieve my best at those levels, I always thank everyone in every club and competition, because they help keep me active, healthy, and fit. They’re good training partners for me, and I hope I can help them.”
