About our Schools League
The Fencing Victoria Schools League is an independent inter-school sports league that enables secondary schools to offer fencing as an option for school sports participation.
Since its first season in 2010, the Schools League has grown to include 8 schools with individual events running with over 100 fencers.
We work closely with our partnered schools to ensure they have all the necessary resources to run training sessions and to equip their students with the safety gear required to participate.

Event Details
All Schools League competitions run exclusively epee events and each competition is separated into a boys competition and a girls competition.
Season Length
The Schools League runs across seven Sundays over terms two and three. Five competitions are individual competitions (4 rounds and 1 championship) and two are teams competitions (1 round and 1 championship).
For exact dates please see our competition calendar.
Individual Event Format
Schools League Individual Rounds 1-3 run as flights of poules. Each fencer will bout against every member of their poule to 5 points or until the time limit per bout has elapsed.
Round 4 is exclusively DE matches.
The championship is a full competition with both poules and DEs.
For rounds 1-4, fencers are assigned their poule in advance of the event so that individual start times can be provided to families to minimise wait times.
Team Event Format
The broad format is the same as the individual championship with the event split into poules and DEs. The match format is different.
Teams consist of 3 fencers with an optional 4th in reserve. Each fencer from one team will fence each member of the opposing team consecutively, with the score of each match carrying over to the next. Each individual match adds 3 points to the maximum possible score. The winning team is the team with the highest score out of 27 at the end of the 9th bout.
The winning teams will progress through the tableau until a team has won the competition.
Event Length
In response to feedback from schools and parents, we now provide concrete competition time frames for each student and minimise long wait times for families.
Individual rounds 1-3 have a ~2hr time commitment. The 4th round, the individual championship, and the team competitions run for a whole day.
